Are Seating Plans Necessary At A Wedding (Even For A Casual Outdoor Buffet)?

I have been asked if it is necessary with a casual wedding to have assigned seating plans. You may find that it's easier if there are assigned tables (not necessarily assigned seating) especially with a large number of guests. Consider this:

1 - Do you have people that you need to keep separate (fueding family members, etc.)...it's sad, but something that needs to be considered.

2 - Do you have a wide variety of people coming (i.e. great aunts and uncles who may end up with your younger friends, or elderly people who might end up next to the loud DJ's speakers)?

3 - If you are serving a meal, as opposed to cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, or cake and punch, then assigned tables seem like the right way to go. Most people would be more comfortable with some sort of direction when there is a meal being served.

4 - Are you having a head table for your bridal party? I am sure that you would like your parents and close relatives seated at the tables closest to you. If people walk in and sit wherever they want, those tables may be taken up by someone that you may not necessarily be that close to.

People are going to get up and mingle anyway, especially with a buffet, but you'll find that the reception will run more smoothly with assigned tables.
