Question: If I am the "and guest" at a wedding and I decline the invitation for the bridal shower, do I still need to send a gift? I don't know the bride and the shower is out of state.
Seeing as you don't even know the bride and you are the date of an invited guest, I would say no, you do not have to send a gift. Some wouldn't feel right about not sending a gift, so if you're one of these people, maybe send something small, but nothing too extravagant.
If the situation were a bit different and you were a direct guest of the wedding and you knew the bride, I would say yes, etiquette is to send a gift even if you can't make the shower for any reason.
It's a personal choice. The bottom line is a gift is just that...a GIFT. No one should ever EXPECT a gift, but I doubt anyone would ever refuse a gift either. ;)
